Alexander ‘Gander’ Roach, 88, of Second Street, New Waterford, passed away Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at home.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Hubert J. and Frances ‘Fanny’ (Ruelland) Roach.
Gander was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. He was employed for over 35 years with the Dominion Coal Company and Devco. Gander was a member of the New Waterford Pensioners’ Club where he enjoyed playing pool. He also enjoyed bowling and had a keen interest in building model boats.
Surviving are daughters, Bernetta McInnis, Sydney, Maria (Peter) MacLean, New Waterford, Carmel (Linus) Muise, Kathleen Roach, Lorraine (Matthew Charazy) Chipman, all of Ontario; stepdaughter, Mary MacKinnon, Victoria, B.C.; sons, Leo, Alexander (Paulette), Donald (Mary), all of New Waterford, Joseph, Michael (Dawn), both of Ontario; stepson, Henry (Laura) MacKinnon, Saskatchewan; brothers, Leger, Halifax, Peter (Shirley), Gardiner Mines; sisters, Mary Cloake, Antoinette Murphy, both of New Waterford; grandchildren, Pete, Kim, Wendy, Tammy, Corrine, Laurie, Dawn, Allison, Jeffrey, Matthew, Sarah, Liz, Doris, Billy, Margaret Ann, Georgina, Jerome, Mary.
Gander was predeceased by his wife, Mary Bridget (MacNeil) Roach, daughter, Teresa, brothers, Francis ‘Frico’, Eugene, John ‘Jimmy’, Peter Louie in infancy, sisters, Louise, Sarah, Agnes, Teresa, and Madeleine.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Gander will be held Monday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Carmel Centre. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery at a later date.
