Date de décès : 20 février 2009
It is with great sadness, we announce the death of Henry ‘Beer’ MacKinnon, who passed away quietly at the Glace Bay Hospital on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Neil and Mary (Gillis) MacKinnon.
Henry will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, as he touched so many with his sincere good nature and storytelling. In New Waterford, he was known as the social taxi driver who owned and operated Service Taxi.
Formerly a resident of New Waterford, Henry resided in Glace Bay over the past several years with his lifetime soulmate, Grace Read. Henry played an important role in the lives of Grace’s two children, Bobby Read and the recently deceased, Lynda Strosja along with their children, Beverly, John, Billy, Robert Read and Angela, Travis and Shane Strojsa. Eleven great-grandchildren enjoyed Henry’s warmth and tales from near and afar.
Henry is survived by his last remaining sibling, Theresa (Sharkey MacDonald), New Waterford.
Henry was predeceased by his siblings, Flora Ryan, Anna McNeil, Bernie and Lawrence MacKinnon. He always shared a special bond with his brother Lawrence and if their combined stories could have been documented it would for certain be on the best-seller list.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery, Glace Bay.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Henry’s name to the Breast Cancer Society in memory of Lynda Strojsa.
Following the mass, there will be a celebration of Henry’s life at Vespers by the Sea, 17 Eleventh St., Glace Bay.
