Ferne Isabel MacDonald, R.N., 92, Whycocomagh, passed away Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 in Northwood Rest Home, Halifax.
Born in Whycocomagh, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Sara Mae (Austin) MacDonald. She was a graduate nurse of Glace Bay General Hospital, School of Nursing 1942. She was employed at Neils Harbour, Cape Breton; Cornwallis Navy Hospital and Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax before serving in R.C.A.F., where she was stationed in Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Sask. and Trenton, Ont.
Her career took her overseas to Germany for a number of years, returning to work in British Colombia for Health and Welfare as an Airport Health Nurse. She also nursed at the Cocaletza Native Hospital in Northern B.C., before her retirement in 1977. She was a member of Stewart United Church, Whycocomagh; the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 123; Dr. Gordon MacLeod Chapter 37, Order of the Eastern Star and Bayville Senior Citizens Club.
She was predeceased by bothers, Dr. Austin and Harvey; sisters, Jessie Rose Fownes, Annie Laura Johnson and Muriel Christine McLean.
She is survived by sister-in-law and friend, Marie MacDonald, Baddeck and four generation of cousins, nieces and nephews, who loved her and will miss her kindness and caring ways.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 at 11 a.m. in Stewart United Church. The Order of the Eastern Star and the Whycocomagh Legion, Branch 123 will share in the service, Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. Burial at a later date in Stewartdale Cemetery.
