It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eva Mary Kaifosh on Monday, March 2, 2009, at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay. Eva resided at Seaview Manor and was formerly of Catherine Street, New Waterford.
Born in Reserve, Jan. 13, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Emerance and Frederick David.
Eva was determined to succeed even as a young lady. As a teenager she started a candy store with one plate of fudge that she had made. A local supplier noted her determination and convinced her to take an assortment of stock on credit. Eva went on to become his top seller of ice cream by the scoop. John Kaifosh, a young man with a liking for ice cream by the scoop, frequented her store. One scoop led to another and Eva married John in 1930. After Eva and John married, she continued to gather local produce when in season from which she baked dessert waffles, pancakes, and pies for her family and the ladies at the former Scotchtown Mission. Eva was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford.
Eva was predeceased by her husband, John Kaifosh (1988) and is survived by her son, David Kaifosh and her daughter, Elsie Nagy.
Nana will be missed by her grandchildren, Fred Kaifosh, Deborah Koivu (Kaifosh), Sandra Kaifosh, Mike Nagy, Ken Nagy, Tim Nagy, and her 13 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
In respect of Eva’s wishes, a private visitation will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will take place Wednesday, March 11 at 10 a.m. in Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
