Bernadette E. Murphy The death of Bernadette E. (Pitts) Murphy F.I.I.C. wife of John Joseph Murphy of Saint John West occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Wednesday, February 6, 2008. Born in Saint John on September 17, 1925 she was the daughter of the late Bessie M. (Duke) and Daniel J. Pitts. Bernie taught swimming for 28 years for the Canadian Red Cross, and was an instructor for the Insurance Institute. She was the first woman in the Atlantic Provinces to receive her Fellowship in the Insurance Institute of Canada. She worked for Anderson, Royal, and Guardian Insurance Companies. She is survived by her husband, Jack; two daughters, Lorraine (John) MacLeod, Francine (Kevin) Artichuk of Moncton, and one son, Michael (Susan) Murphy of Quispamsis; one sister, Jeanie McKee of Hampton; five grandchildren, Michaela, Adam, and Noah MacLeod, Madeline Artichuk (Derek Trapros), and Louise Artichuk, and great-grandson, Taeo Artichuk, several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by five brothers, Daniel, Wilfred, James, Art, and Walter, and three sisters, Madeline, Lorraine and Louise. Resting at Castle "Fallsview" Funeral Home (634-1701), 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 12 noon. Visiting at Castle "Fallsview" on Monday from 2 until 9 p.m. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated by her family.
