Keptin Walter Daniel Denny

Mi'kmaq Grand Council 58, Eskasoni Walter Denny, 58, of 41 Denny's Lane, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008; the anniversary of his mother Clara's passing, surrounded by his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Keptin Levi R. and Clara (Gould) Denny. A member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni, he was extremely committed to his parish, St. Ann's, Chapel Island and above all, his faith. Walter was very active in the Cursillo Movement and the annual St. Ann De-Beaupre pilgrimage, Quebec. He served many years in volunteering his time to organize community events and activities, including, the rink, economic development, as well as serving as president of the Eskasoni Bowling League and coaching in local hockey. An entrepreneur, Walter operated Denny's General Store for 25 years as a partner with his father Levi R. He was employed as supervisor of maintenance and transportation with the Eskasoni School Board for 17 years until retirement in 1994. Walter was active in the MS Society and the CNIB and will be posthumously awarded Role Model of the Year for the Chief Allison M. Bernard Memorial High School, Eskasoni. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, the former Annie Marie Pierro; his 3 sons, Keptin Walter Jr. (Nicole), Dion (Angela), Coun. Leroy (Natalie); a daughter, Shelley Ann (Danny) Stevens; 13 grandchildren, Walter, Cody, Jaylynn, Kelly Anne, Yvette, Dionne, Bethany, Lenita, Leo-Levi, Jolly, John, Danielle, Dan K., all of Eskasoni; 2 brothers, Andrew 'Gally' (Darlene), Chapel Island, Charles 'Charlie' (Rosie), Eskasoni; and 2 sisters, Bridget Ann (Russell), Eskasoni, and Rebecca, Boston. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, several godchildren, by 5 aunts, Molly, Janie, Josephine, Virginia and Margaret and uncle, Ronnie. He was predeceased by a brother, Keptin Leonard P. and by an infant sister. Visitation will take place today, Thursday from 2-4 p.m.at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, resuming this evening at 7 p.m. at the family residence 41 Denny's Lane, Eskasoni. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Family Church with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
