Port Morien, NS Dec. 18, 1963 - Dec. 25, 2008 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Bernard "Bernie" W. Timmons at home on Christmas Day surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with cancer. Bernie was born in Sydney on December 18, 1963 to Mary (Robinson) and the late James Timmons. Prior to Bernie's illness, he was employed as a Firefighter with the Cape Breton Regional Fire Services, a career in which he wore the uniform proudly. He had been previously employed with H. Hopkins, Ltd., Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board and Transit Cape Breton. Bernie enjoyed a great sense of camaraderie with all his co-workers and fellow Brothers. He was a member and past Chief of the Port Morien Volunteer Fire Department, Thistle Masonic Lodge No. 36 AF & AM and IAFF No. 2779. Bernie had a tremendous work ethic and was selflessly devoted to his family and friends. He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly fishing with his children and keeping his yard pristine. He looked forward to his Saturday morning hockey games and pool parties with his family and friends. Bernie lived each day to the fullest and found perfection in what others might see as an average day. Bernie is survived by his mother Mary, his beloved wife ,Joanne (Blades), loving daughter Sarah and loving sons Jamie and Nicholas, all at home. He is also survived by sisters Belinda (John Robert) Clements, Port Morien, Annie (Kerry) MacLeod, Donkin and brother Eric (Martha) Timmons, Main-a-Dieu. Also left to mourn are Katherine Timmons (mother to Sarah and Jamie), nephews Jimmy (Tanya), Conor, Brett and Liam; nieces Lauren and Lindsay. Bernie was the cherished son-in-law of Paul & Catherine Blades, Donkin and cherished brother-in-law to Paula and Jennifer. Bernie held a very special place in the heart of Joanne's grandmother, Margie MacDonald, who was Bernie's tea and kitchen partner. Bernie was blessed with a lifelong and faithful friendship with Billy Jones. Bernie will be missed by his loyal and faithful four-legged friend, Buffy, who remained at Bernie's side to the very end. Visitation for Bernie will be held Saturday 7-9 p.m., Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The Masons will have a prayer service 6:45 p.m. on Sunday. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Monday at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Port Morien with the Reverend Fr. Paul Findlay officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow at the Port Morien Legion. Donations in Bernie's memory may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care, Expansion of Cape Breton Cancer Center or VON.
