88, New Waterford Martha Brown, 88, of New Waterford, passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Perfect) MacLeod. Martha was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Scotchtown Pensioners' Club. Martha enjoyed going from house to house playing poker with her friends. She also liked playing darts, bingo and going to the casino. In her early years, she worked on the cleaning staff at the Cape Breton Hospital. Surviving are daughters, Ella Brown, Barrie, Ont., Sheila (Alister Fraser) Brown, Eileen Brown, both of Scotchtown, Evelyn (Murdock) Odo, New Waterford; sons, James, Frank (Alice), both of New Waterford; brothers, Joseph MacLeod, Bridgeport, Charles MacLeod, New Waterford; sisters, Sarah Sampson, Agnes Chiasson, both of New Waterford, Theresa Hannigan, Glace Bay; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her compassionate and loving careworker, Shirley MacDonald, New Waterford, and her best pal, her dog, Cocoa. Martha was predeceased by her husband, Clifton, son, Frank Bernard in infancy and four brothers, Joey, Howard, Elias and Alex 'Eckie'. Visitation will be held Monday, Dec. 29 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass to celebrate Martha's life will take place Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, with a reception to follow at Saint Agnes Hall, New Waterford.
