John MacKenzie MacKeil, 81, died at the Dartmouth General Hospital on March 9, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was born in Caribou, Nova Scotia, the son of the late John and Christene (MacKenzie) MacKeil. He died of complications from pneumonia.
Predeceased by sisters Margaret MacMaster, Anna MacKay, and brother Blaine MacKeil.
Survived by his wife of 52 years, Gayle (Stratton), children: Lynn MacKeil, Dartmouth; Janet (Alex) Walker, North Vancouver; Jeff MacKeil, Edmonton; Scott (Catherine) MacKeil, Richmond Hill. Grandchildren: Mallory MacLeod, Jared MacLeod (Dartmouth), Kiel Walker (Quebec), Cameron Walker, Leah Walker (North Vancouver), and Sarah MacKeil (Richmond Hill). Also survived by his sisters: Doris MacMillan (Pictou), Jesse Fitch (Moncton), and Jean (Ralph) Heighton (Pictou).
John worked for Shell Canada for over 30 years and also enjoyed being a former member of Brightwood Golf and Country Club and the Dartmouth Curling Club.
He attended First Baptist Church in Dartmouth.
John was a devoted husband, father, brother, and uncle, and his presence and sense of humour will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m., Thursday, March 11 in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 12 at First Baptist Church, 100 Ochterloney Street, Dartmouth, Rev. Martin Zwicker officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall
