86, Whitney Pier Stephen 'Big Steve' Humeniuk, a lifelong resident of Whitney Pier, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home. He was the son of the late Michael and Pauline (Kosovich) Humeniuk of Kiev, Ukraine. 'Big Steve' worked at the Sydney Steel Plant open hearth department for 44 years. He was a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders; Branch 128 Whitney Pier legion. He was awarded several medals and honours after serving overseas. 'Big Steve' was recognized by the King's Order on April 4, 1946 for distinguished service. He also received the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-1945 Canadian Volunteer Award, the Dutch Medal of Remembrance and a gold medal in recognition of 250 years of responsible government in Nova Scotia (October 2008). He was a member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian parish. He was an avid sports fan and had a passion for darts in his later years. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rose (Hoysa); his five children, daughters, Shirley Ings, North Sydney, Donna (Edgar) Barrington, Portage; sons, Steve (Betty), Sydney River, Wayne (Monica), Winnipeg, and Danny (Cathy), Cleveland, N.S.; his sister, Kay Francuz, Guelph, Ont.; brothers, Tony (Pauline), Sydney, John (Evelyn), Sydney River, and Bill (Freda), Hamilton, Ont. 'GeeGee' is survived by grandchildren, Stephen Ings, Shauna Munro, Troy and Tiffany Barrington, Jocelyn, Krista and Vanessa Humeniuk, Craig, Dayna and Kyla Hominick, Julia, Kevin and Laura Humeniuk; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Noah Ings, Nila and Elise Munro and Amelia Hominick. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Annie (Bobby) Bobyk, his brother, Peter (Rita) Humeniuk and brother-in-law, John Francuz. Recently he was predeceased by his special son-in-law, Harold Ings, North Sydney. Visitation for the late Mr. Humeniuk will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sunday, Jan. 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Panachyda will take place at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church with Fr. Roman Dusanowskyj officiating. Burial to take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church Fund.
