It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Catherine Marie McKinnon, announce her peaceful passing on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family. Born in New Waterford, Aug. 22, 1945, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Mary C. (Thomas) McKinnon. Cathy was the owner and operator of J & K Hairdressing, Victoria Road, Whitney Pier, and was a hairdresser for approximately 45 years. She loved her family and was involved in all activities with her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed walking and spending time at her cottage in Gabarus. Cathy is survived by five brothers, Donald John, Scotchtown, Alex (Joan), Angus (Joanne), both of Hamilton, Ont., Archie (Marie), New Waterford, and Robert (Betty Ann), Sydney Forks; five sisters, Joanne (Alonzo) Nearing, Albert Bridge, Marion (Tommy) Williamson, Mary Warren, both of Scotchtown, Rita (William) Moore, Lingan, and Ernestina (Hughie) MacArthur, Sydney. She is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews and 16 grandnieces and nephews, whom she cherished. Cathy had four godchildren, Scott Warren, Kurt Nearing, Sandra Prince and a special godson, Charles (Buddy) Boudreau. She will be sadly missed by her family, friends, clients and her two closest, friends, Kay Boudreau and Florence Hasiuk. She was predeceased by her parents. There will be no visitation by her request. Cremation has taken place under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. A funeral mass to celebrate Cathy's life will be held Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at 11 a.m., in the parish of St. Leonard/St. Michael Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial to take place in the parish cemetery at a later date. Following mass, a luncheon will be held at the KOC, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford, all are welcome.
