54, Dominion/Calgary It is with deep sorrow that we, the family of Anthony "Gary" Basso, announce his passing on Jan. 22, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay on March 8, 1954, he was the son of Antonio "Tony" Basso and the late Leta (Melanson) Basso. Gary joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in December of 1973 and was posted to Alberta, where he served until joining the Calgary Police Service in 1980. Gary enjoyed the many years he spent with family and friends in Calgary until his retirement in 2006. From the time he was young until the day of his passing Gary was a sports enthusiast. He was an avid golfer, baseball player and hockey player, but most of all he enjoyed the company of his family and many amazing friends while doing what he loved. While living in Calgary for many years, Gary never forgot his Cape Breton roots and loved to spend his summer vacations on Dominion Beach and sharing great memories with his lifelong buddies. Gary is survived by his father, Tony Basso, Dominion; his children, Daina Basso, Courtenay, B.C., Gary Basso (Halifax), Angela Thompson, Katie (Fraser) Rasmussen, and Alix Basso, all of Okotoks, Alta. Also surviving are his brother, Glenn (Susan) Basso, New Waterford; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Gary was predeceased by his mother, Leta Basso. A special thank you to the staff at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre as well as the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their amazing care and kindness that will never be forgotten.
