44, Bras d'Or It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cathy O'Handley, a resident of Bras d'Or and formerly of North Sydney, on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, following a courageous battle with breast cancer. Cathy was the loving daughter of James and Anna (Pickles) O'Handley of North Sydney. Cathy was a faithful employee at Picture Perfect on King Street in North Sydney, for 10 years, and later worked with Goldsils Jewelers in the North Sydney Mall, until her illness forced an early retirement. Cathy was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or, and was a proud member of the Cape Breastoners Dragon Boat team. She will be fondly remembered for her quiet manner and friendly smile. She is survived by her life long partner (husband), Wendell Stubbert; and her precious daughter, Olivia Paige; her parents, Jimmy and Anna O'Handley, North Sydney; her brothers, Jimmy, Calgary, John, Toronto, Donnie (Tammy), Coxheath; her sister, Judy (Eric) Carey, Bras d'Or; her father and mother-in-law, Ross and Sally Stubbert, Bras d'Or; sisters-in-law, Catherine Stubbert (Kevin), Evelyn MacDermid (David); brothers-in-law, Ross (Rhonda) Stubbert, Todd (Tammy) Stubbert; and her nieces and nephews, Chesley, Noah, Andrina, Katelyn, Will, Hannah, John, Crystal, Catherine, Matthew. She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, John and Catherine O'Handley, her maternal grandparents, Bob and Olive Pickles, and her uncle, A.J. O'Handley. The family would like to take this opportunity to send special thanks to Dr. John Kirkpatrick along with the doctors, nurses and staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and the Palliative Care unit of the regional hospital for the care and attention given to Cathy over the course of her illness. Visitation for Cathy will be held Tuesday, 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will take place Thursday, 10:30 a.m. from St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating. Burial to take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d'Or.
