Today I lost my father
Today I lost my friend.
It is with great sadness that we tell you that our father, Emil Went, went to his eternal rest on March 15, 2009, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital with his daughter, Marian and Paul by his side.
He is now eternally and forever with his wife, Eileen, his special son, Jamie and son, John.
Emil was a father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
He was born to Russian parents, the late Emil and Sophie Went, Gardiner Mines.
Dad spent most of his years living in Scotchtown raising his family and the last two years living with his daughter Marian and Paul Vienneau in Dominion.
He was predeceased by sisters, Lydia, Alwina and Olga and brothers, Rin and Albert.
He is survived by his brother, Ad (Audrey), Ottawa. He is survived by his daughter and caregiver, Marian (Paul) Vienneau, Dominion, with whom he resided the past two years. He will be greatly missed by Marian, Paul and granddaughter, Courtney and also grandson, Chris (Tara) and great-granddaughter, Madisyn Paige. Also missed by grandchildren, Christine (Stuart) Chiasson and Mike Went, both of New Brunswick.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda (Richard) Thornhill, British Columbia; grandson, Ken, Japan; and great-grandson, Elric, British Columbia.
Love you lots Dad, love Linda.
Growing up in the Gardiner on a farm, working in the coal mines, being a fireman and his love of people made him the man he was. Dad was a kind, gentle, hard-working man. He was a coal miner for 45 years. This was his life and if you worked for Emil Went in the pit, he expected you to work as hard as him. He was well respected by all his fellow miners and by everyone he met.
His second love was the Scotchtown Volunteer Fire Department. He belonged to this for 60 years and was greatly respected there. He loved going down to the fire hall in the afternoon to check on the boys and have a good game of tarabish. He always liked to win.
He was a member of the New Waterford Pensioners’ Club and ran the card games and the pension fund for years. He loved a good game of 45s and he especially loved being out with the people he would meet. Dad and Jamie were quite a fixture at the card games and the fire hall the last 15 years.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A fireman’s funeral will be held Friday, March 20 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church, River Ryan, with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. A celebration of life luncheon will take place at the KOC hall in New Waterford immediately following the funeral mass.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Scotchtown Volunteer Fire Department, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Parish of St. Leonard, New Waterford.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
Special thanks to Dr. Littlejohn for his care and compassion for dad and my family over the years and to the second floor staff of New Waterford hospital for the excellent care and compassion to dad and his family. To V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home for all they do to make this journey so much easier. Special thanks to City Homemaker staff for the great care they have given dad in the past year. Thanks to dad’s girls, Cathy, Peggy and Diane. He enjoyed all your visits. Special thank you to Cape Care for the extra help and compassion they gave dad and Marian during this time. Also thanks to palliative care; they help make everything so much easier.
Dad, it has been a great honour to be your daughter and to have spent time enjoying each other. I love you forever and always. I miss you already and give Jamie and Johnnie a hug and kiss for me. We made a lot of memories together, especially the last 15 years. Lots of moments to remember!
Dad, you take a little of me with you but you leave a lot of you with me. It has been a pleasure and an honour to have you for my dad! Nice day dad, forever your loving daughter, Marian.
Emil is also survived by his other children, Greg, Michael, Anne Marie, Virginia and Angela.
