Gertrude R. Swallow, 90, of New Glasgow, formerly of MacPherson’s Mills, passed away April 1st, 2009, at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in MacPherson’s Mills, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Grace (MacDonald) MacDonald.
Gertrude resided in New Glasgow all her married life. A homemaker, Gertrude was devoted to the interests of a growing family. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow. She was a Sunday school teacher. She was an active member of the Mother Auxiliary to 7th Scouts and Cubs. In ensuing years, she joined the staff of Thompson and Sutherlands Ltd. for 15 years until its closing and was an office clerk of Canadian Tire Corp. until her retirement.
She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by sons: James “Donald†(Dorothy) Ottawa, ON; Brian Mack (Jane), Wilmot; Alexander M. (Wanda), Stellarton; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Henry; son, Wendell Clyde; sisters: Ella Ross, Eva Miller, Ruth MacDonald, Bessie Bannerman, Jessie Blair, Hannah Blom, Mary Ross and Myrtle MacDonald; brothers: Finlay, Duncan and Clarence MacDonald.
The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, from where funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Burial will be in the MacPherson’s Mills Cemetery at a later date.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gertrude may be made to MacPherson’s Mills Cemetery, First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow or to a charity of one’s choice.
