Amherst, N.S. – Maxwell Laurie “Max” Gray, 80, Amherst, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, with his family by his side. Born in Fort Lawrence, Cumberland Co., he was a son of the Late J. Laurie and Leola I. (MacNeil) Gray. Prior to his retirement, he owned and operated a farm equipment dealership in Amherst known as Gray and Lusby, along with his partners, Ivan Lusby and Ray McIsaac. He was an avid hunter and he enjoyed fishing, curling and playing cards with his friends. He also enjoyed watching hockey and ball games on television. He enjoyed traveling to Newfoundland with his wife Sylvia, and visiting friends Henry and Mary Giles at their home and going to their cabin on the water. He celebrated his 80th birthday at the home of Kathy and Sam Dow and thoroughly enjoyed the surprise party held in his honour. He always enjoyed his trips to the home of Kathy and Sam Dow and he always said when leaving: “They treated us like gold and we never went away hungry and we were always welcome there.” Surviving is his wife, the former Sylvia J. MacDonald. Also surviving are a daughter, Dr. Susan Gray (Ted McCleave), Saint John, N.B.; son, Howard Gray (Terri-Lynn) Amherst; step-daughters Lisa MacDonald (Dan), Amherst, Anna Wright (Victor) Maccan, Cumberland Co.,; granddaughters, Katie and Sarah Gray of Amherst; grandson, Ben Gray, Amherst; great-grandson, Evan Gray, Amherst. Also surviving are seven step-grandchildren; sister, Pearl Gray, Brampton, Ont.; and brother, Roland Gray (Ann) Maryland, U.S.; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a number of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. He was predeceased by a brother, Deanne Gray. Visitation was held Monday evening, and Tuesday afternoon and evening with the funeral service to be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m., at Allen’s Funeral Home, 60 Water St., Oxford, with Rev. Dr. Waldo Grandy officiating. Interment will take place in the Fort Lawrence Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre – Palliative Care, Victorian Order of Nurses, Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
