STELLARTON – Genevieve E. (Montrose) MacLellan of Jubilee Ave., Stellarton, passed away peacefully on April 16th, 2009 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, following a courageously fought battle with Parkinson’s Disease which she did so bravely and with dignity over a period of 13 years.
Genevieve was truly an inspiration to her family, friends and caregivers, when with her strong and steadfast faith in God her savior, was given the amazing strength to cope and bravely face her illness each day.
Born in Pugwash Junction, Cumberland Co., Genevieve was the loving daughter of the late Clifford and Rose (Ripley) Montrose.
She was a devoted and faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, and while in good health enjoyed being active and supportive of the different church organizations, including being a member of the ladies auxiliary of First Presbyterian Church.
At this time we as Genevieve’s family, would like to sincerely express our gratitude to Rev. Charles McPherson for his pastoral care so faithfully given to our mother, on his regular visits to her home which she truly enjoyed and very much appreciated.
Following graduation from Oxford High School and Nova Scotia Teachers College, Truro, Genevieve wishing to further her education, enrolled in and completed university studies at Dalhousie University in Halifax, and also studies in England enabling her to have achieved her future teaching career.
During her teaching years, Genevieve was highly respected by both students and parents, who had always remembered her for her outstanding qualities of kindness, patience, integrity, wisdom, determination and for always having been able to find extra time following regular school hours to assist her students whenever possible, who will in future years fondly remember Genevieve as a special teacher and friend.
Genevieve held teaching positions in both Cumberland and Pictou Counties, having taught her latter years at the G.R. Saunders School in Stellarton from where she retired.
Surviving are sons: Brian (Martha) MacLellan, Halifax; Wayne MacLellan, Stellarton; her cherished grandchildren, Aleka and Nicholas, both of Halifax; devoted sister, Ruth Hattie; and brother-in-law, Don, Sackville, N.B; sister-in-law, Kaye Montrose, Kingston, Ont; several nieces and nephews and spouses from out of province: Sharon, Glenda, Karen, Susan, Christopher, John, David, Michael; sisters-in-law, Bessie MacLellan, Eleanor (Bruce) Heighton and Grace (Don) Murray, all of Pictou.
Besides her parents Clifford and Rose Montrose and parents-in-law Clifford and Olive MacLellan Genevieve was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd in 1980; sister, Bernice Porteous; and brother-in-law, Carman; and by her only brother, Harold Montrose.
A heartfelt thank you is being expressed to so many friends for their kindness and love shown to our mother, Genevieve, during her years of illness, to the very dedicated home care workers for providing such tender love and caring each day. To family doctors, Anita and Rudolph Bohmer for their care and compassion shown over many years, and to the nurses and staff and volunteer workers at the Aberdeen Hospital for their kind assistance.
The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Burial will be in the Durham Cemetery. A time of fellowship will follow the service in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Genevieve may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, or to a charity of one’s choice.
