It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fred Whalen on Wednesday May 19, 2010 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Freda (Fougere) Babineau and the late George Whalen.
He was employed with several companies over the years.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, gardening and going fishing. Fred was a volunteer worker for many years and was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Church and the Knights of Columbus, council 1060.
Fred is survived by his wife, Pauline (MacMullin); daughter, Frances (Robert) Germain, Hamilton; his precious grandchildren, Bradley and Melissa, Hamilton; sister, Thelma Watts, Dartmouth; brother, Alfred (Kay) Babineau, Oshawa, Ont., as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Pauline Riley, Mary MacDonald, twin sister, Theresa Stevens, sister, Nellie Doublett, brothers, Albert, Harry, George, Douglas and Henry.
Visitation will be held Monday, May 24, 2010 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at the St. Anthony Daniel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivary officiating.
Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the CBRH or charity of one's choice.
