It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Mervyn J. Stagg, on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at his home.
Born in North Sydney, Feb. 29, 1924, he was the son of the late William and Mildred (Davidge) Stagg. A veteran of the Second World War, Merv joined the Cape Breton Highlanders in 1940 at the age of 16 and spent the next five years serving as the regimental bugler. In 1946, after the war he returned home and became the branch bugler at the Canadian Legion Branch #19 in North Sydney, playing the Last Post for veterans over the next many years. He was a member of the 36th Battery Band which later became the Sydney Mines Legion Centennial Band and last year played at over 40 cruise ships and many parades and events. In 1948 he began operating Stagg Taxi which is still in operation today with many loyal customers. Merv was instrumental in starting Little League baseball on the Northside, along with Russell Stewart and Jimmy Costello in the 1950s. During the years of 1956-1962 he served as councillor for the Town of North Sydney. His love of playing the trumpet allowed him to join many other talented musicians and friends in great dance bands performing all over Cape Breton. He was very proud of being a Cape Breton Highlander and was an active member of the Cape Breton Highlander Association. In December 2008 he was presented with the Democracy 250 medal by the executive council of the Province of Nova Scotia for his many years of community service as a regimental bugler.
He is survived by his daughter, Janice Harris, North Sydney; two sons, Jim (Dayna) Stagg, Santa Rosa, Calif., Bill (Kim) Stagg, San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren, John, Rick, Kimber, Randi and Sierra; six great-grandchildren; his sisters, Joyce (Jim) Johnston, Sherbrooke, N.S., Pearl MacLean, Markham; and brother, Jack (Willena) Stagg, North Sydney; many nieces, nephews and cousins and also his special friend, Josephine Aubry, Sydney Mines.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Garnet and David (infant), his sister, Ethel Jesty and his former wife, Eileen McTimoney.
Visitation for Merv will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday, May 10 in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service to be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
