J. Basil Maynard - age 71, of Ellershouse, Hants County, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 20, 2010, in Blomidon Court, Greenwich, Kings County, after a lengthy battle with cancer, and surrounded by his family. Born on May 15, 1939, in MacKay Section, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late John and Muriel (Caldwell) Maynard. Basil owned and operated his own service station in Fairview, Alberta, for a number of years and after returning to Nova Scotia, he did carpentry work and body mechanic work until retiring. Basil loved going to yard sales in which he was known for his wheeling and dealing. He also enjoyed having yard sales. Basil is survived by his wife, the former Gloria Williams; two step-sons, Kevin (Deanna) Kelly, Ellershouse; Randy Kelly, Newport Corner; siblings, Elinor Currie, Windsor; Ronald (Vivian), Windsor; Joan Borgel, Fairview, Alberta; Ernie (Helene), Truro; Carole Mowat, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by, his parents, John and Muriel (Caldwell) Maynard, his brothers-in-law, Don Currie, Herman Borgel, and the Rev. Sandy Mowat. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2010, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. A memorial service was 2 p.m. Monday, May 31, 2010, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Wendy Kean officiated. Interment was in Oakhill Cemetery, Ellershouse, followed by a reception in the Ellershouse Community Hall. Family flowers only, donations in memory may be made to the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department Building Fund, Saint Louise Union Church, Ellershouse or to a charity of one's choice.
