PICTOU LANDING FIRST NATION – Bernard (Bernie) Bernard, 79 of 39 Maple Street, Pictou Landing First Nation, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Pictou Landing he was a son of the late Chief William and Annie Mae (Syliboy) Bernard.
Bernie worked in Framingham, Massachusetts for 16 years moving back to Pictou Landing in 1978. He also worked in many areas of New York and New Jersey. His sportsmanship was hockey and softball. He won many medals and trophies for running the Boston marathon and ran in many other areas, including Sydney, and the Highland Games in Antigonish. Bernie had many talents and was full of life. He made beautiful Mi’Kmaq chairs out of many types of wood.
He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy May (Martin), Pictou Landing First Nation; a son, Gary, Pictou Landing First Nation; brothers: Frank, Leonard and Colin (Susie), all of Pictou Landing First Nation; sisters: Katerine Helstowski, Wisconsin; Mary Gladys Bernard, Bernadette Bernard and Mary Elizabeth (Allan) Francis, all of Pictou Landing First Nation; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by sisters: Yvonne Bernard, Mary Agnes; and a brother, Patrick.
His remains will rest at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church, Pictou Landing First Nation after 7 p.m. Saturday from where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Monday with Father Gary MacPherson officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
