It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Dorothy (Mc Lean) Stephens, formerly of Whitney Avenue, Sydney. At the age of 101, she passed away peacefully at Mountain Lake Seniors Living Community in Nelson, B.C., on April 28, 2010.
The youngest daughter of Joe and Mary (Fraser) Mc Lean, Dorothy was a native of Glace Bay and lived most of her life in Sydney before moving to British Columbia in later years.
The last member of her immediate family, she was predeceased by her husband, William J. 'Bill' Stephens; daughter, Faye Porter and grandson, Glen MacDonald.
She is survived by son, John W. 'Jack' (Ameta) Stephens, Baddeck , and their sons, William J. 'Bill', David and James; daughter, Elaine Lilly, Halifax and her daughters, Phyllis 'Bipsy' and Brenda; Faye's children, Janet and Graeme; daughter, Diane Stephens, Sydney and her children, Todd, Gina, Richard and Lynn; as well as 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Dorothy's contributions to the community were many and included instructional leadership with St. John's Ambulance, Cubs Scouts den mother and regent with the Beinn Bhreagh Chapter of the IODE. She was an avid supporter of Covenant House and Transition House, at times using her creative talents as a seamstress to support the cause. In younger days, Dorothy was also a fierce competitor at the curling rink and around the bridge table. She was well known for her exceptional culinary skills. Dorothy inherited her sense of humour from her beloved father, Joe and passed on to her family a love of music and antiques that has spanned generations. She will be remembered by many for her generous spirit, creative talents and the twinkle in her eye.
A memorial service will be held at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2010, with a reception to follow.
Memorial donations may be made to Transition House, Loaves and Fishes, or IODE Nova Scotia.
