It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, Gordon 'Smokey' Hatcher, on Friday, June 11, 2010 at the Harbour View Facility, Veterans Unit in Sydney Mines.
Born in North Sydney, he was the eldest son of the late Theodore and Amelia (Hamilton) Hatcher.
Gordon served twice overseas with the Nova Scotia Highlanders, in Canada and England during the Second World War. After being injured, he was brought back on the QEI and spent eighteen months recovering at Camphill Hospital, Halifax. Gordon was honorably discharged December 15, 1943. He was also a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, North Sydney.
Gordon worked for many years with CN's Bridge and Building sector as a carpenter. Following a workplace injury, he worked his remaining 35 years as a janitor for the CNR.
His hobbies included woodworking, filing saws, music, reading, drawing and mostly took great interest, pride and love in his family and horses. Gordon was one of the original members of the Cape Breton Western Riders.
Gordon is survived by his sons, Ted (Elaine) and Philip (Shelley), both of North Sydney, Stan (Heather) of Upper North Sydney, Calvin (Donna) of Sydney Mines, David of L'Arche in Orangedale; his daughters, Rita MacKinnon (Raymond) of Sydney and Diane (Kim) of North Sydney; his grandchildren, Mark, Kimmie, John D., Daniel, Rochelle, Stacey, Amanda, Tara, Crystal, and Jennifer; by seven great grandchildren; his brothers, Ted (Peggy) of Amherst, Stan of Vancouver, Clayton of Ontario and by his sister, Hilda Purves of Sydney Mines.
Besides his parents, Gordon was predeceased by his beautiful wife Helen (Green); brother, Dan; sisters, Loretta Hill, Edith Giles (Alex), and four children in infancy.
Gordon's family would like to express their utmost thank you to the residents and staff of the Harbour View Facility, without whom he would have not received the constant care, attention, kindness and the staff's ability to always make him smile and feel safe.
Gordon will always be loved, respected and remembered for his great knowledge, patience, kind heart, big smile and the unwavering love he gave to his family and friends.
In accordance with Gordon's wishes, there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held Monday 3 p.m. from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Gloria McClure-Fraser, officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to L'Arche Cape Breton or any charity.
