Gwendolyn Ethel Florence Mason aged 87 years of Mason Avenue, Springhill, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 in QE II Health Sciences Centre (VG Site) Halifax. Born in Parrsboro, she was a daughter of the Late A. J. and Ethel (Morris) Mason.
Gwen was a certified nursing assistant with the Highland View Hospital, Amherst for 30 years and served as the president of the NS CNA Association; she was chair of the Citizen's Advisory Committee of the Springhill Institution, a committee she served on for nine years; member of the advisory board for the NS School for Girls in Truro for three years; chair of the Cumberland Planning Advisory Committee for three years; member of the All Saints Hospital Board for five years, one of those as chair; she served on the Board of Trade and Red Cross; member of All Saints Springhill Hospital Auxiliary. She was the first female elected to the Springhill Town Council where she served nine years, one of those as deputy Mayor. Gwen enjoyed spending the months of July and August at her cottage.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Richard) Calder, St. Margaret's Bay; brother, Archie Mason, Fredericton; grandsons, Todd (Claire) Calder, Halifax and Troy (Debra) Calder, Bedford; two great grandsons, Kieran and Cameron; great granddaughter Ava; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband Edward Cameron; her companion of many years Paul Myles; daughter Karen Lee in infancy; brothers, Lloyd and Morris; sisters, Evelyn and Gladys "Girlie".
Cremation has taken place under the direction of A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361) from where a visitation will be held from 7 - 9 pm,Monday, July 5, 2010. Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, July 6, 2010 from All Saints Anglican Church, Springhill, with The Reverend Frank Likely officiating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill, N. S.
If so desired, donations in Gwen's memory may be made to The Nova Scotia Kidney Foundation or All Saints Springhill Hospital Auxiliary.
