Lieu de naissance : Crockers Cove, Terre-Neuve, Canada
Date de naissance : 10 août 1909

Date de décès : 9 juillet 2010

Violet Blanche Simmons Tompkins, 100, went to be with her Lord, July 9, 2010. She was born August 10, 1909 in Crockers Cove, Newfoundland, daughter of James Edward and Sarah Ann Long Simmons. She left Newfoundland in 1927 at the age of 18 to find work in Boston, MA, where she met Vaughn A. Tompkins and married him July 3, 1928. They were married for 74 years. Violet leaves five children, Vaughn Allen Jr and wife Margaret, Tewksbury MA, Arnold Aubrey and wife Lorene, Framingham MA, Irene Dorothy Helf and husband Stewart, O'Fallon IL, Carol Goldie Gardner and husband Edward, Lathrop CA, Lois Estelle Stevens, Surry ME and 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Special friends left behind are Jennie Goodfellow, Somerville MA and nieces who helped Violet and Vaughn while they were retired in New Brunswick, Barbara (Glen) and Geraldine (Stanley) Crandlemire of Mt. Pleasant. Besides being an outstanding mother, mother-in-law, grand and great grand mother while living in the Boston area, Violet picked up handicapped children from as far away as Providence RI and drove them to the Schools for the Blind and Deaf in Boston, returning them to their homes in the evening. She was not a shrinking Violet by any standards - in 1952 she shot the second largest bull moose recorded to be taken in Newfoundland with a spread of 52 and 3/4 inches and 20 points weighting in at 1800 pounds, as well as many deer in New Brunswick. Violet was a great story teller and enriched her family's and friend's knowledge of how life was when she grew up, seeing the advent of electricity, telephones and horseless carriages run on gasoline. She was pre-deceased by her husband Vaughn A. Tompkins, siblings, Lemuel, Fredericka, Ruby, James and Lila. One daughter-in-law, Margaret Eveline McCracken and two son-in-laws Thomas Henry Stevens and William Alfred LeBlanc.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 16th from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 9 P.M. at the Britton Funeral Home, 2 High Street, Hartland. The funeral service will be on Saturday the 17th at 11:00 A.M. from the Lorne Britton Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hartland. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Dr. Walter Chestnut Public Library, 395 Main Street, Hartland, NB CANADA E7P 2N3.
