Marianita Power, 77, (formerly Sr. St. Bernard Meriam, Congregation of Notre Dame), passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010, at the MacGillivray Guest Home in Sydney. Before going to the guest home she resided in Coxheath for many years.
Born in Glace Bay, and raised on Commercial Street, Marianita was the daughter of the late Bernard and Ethel (Daye) Power.
She was a former member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. Marianita graduated from Normal College and taught school at Brook Village, Glace Bay and Antigonish.
She received a BA, B Ed from St. Francis Xavier University, a Masters in Elementary Education and a Doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Marianita was associated with pre-service, in service, curriculum and program development in the education departments of St. FX, UCCB and the University of Alberta. For several years she worked as an education and human development consultant which took her to several provinces to help educators, hospital personnel and parent groups. Marianita was the first director of the Bachelor of Child Study Program at Mount Saint Vincent University. In 1985, Dr. Power was appointed executive assistant with the Nova Scotia Teachers Union. She had spent close to 25 years with the Congregation of Notre Dame Nuns.
Nita as she was known, was a very outgoing lady who loved reading and skating. She also loved animals, especially cats.
She is survived by two brothers, Russell (Dawn), Mira Gut, Darrell, Coxheath; two nephews, Michael Crowell, Edmonton, Neil Power, Glace Bay; three nieces, Patricia Croft, Karen Horsman, both in Moncton, and Erin Power, Glace Bay.
Nita was predeceased by her sister, Joan Crowell and her brother-in-law, Ted Crowell.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 27th from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Anne's Church with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Cremation to follow with interment at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
All are welcome to join the family for a reception in the church foyer. A prayer service in Marianita's honor will be held Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
