On July 2, 2010, after a lengthy illness, Mary O'Keefe (nee Barry), aged 76 years, passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, NL, while surrounded by her family. A funeral service was held in Placentia, NL, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church on July 5, and Mary was laid to rest in the Barrisway Cemetery. Many thanks to those who sent flowers, expressions of sympathy, or donations to the Libra House Women's Shelter in her memory. Special thanks to Labradorian Printers Ltd, Maher's Funeral Home, staff at the Health Sciences Centre, Sacred Heart Parish Group, and of course friends and family who comforted us during this heartbreaking loss. Mary was born on Merasheen Island in Placentia Bay, NL on May 22, 1934, and her family later resettled in Placentia, NL. She raised her family in Big Barrisway, NL and eventually moved to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador, where she remained until her recent illness brought her back to the island. This world is a much better place because she was in it...she leaves behind to mourn eight children, eighteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, four brothers, homecare and hospital staff who provided expert care to her during her final years, as well as a large circle of friends and extended family.
