Marcella (Bates) MacDonald of Antigonish, died Friday August 13, 2010, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a period of illness.
Born May 18, 1939, she was predeceased by her parents, Marcella (MacDougall) Bates and John Bates, both of Bateston, Cape Breton; and her husband, the late Kenneth (Odgie) MacDonald of Antigonish.
She served in the Canadian Armed Forces (Canadian Air Force) from 1959 to 1963. She moved to Boston in 1964 where she worked for the Jimmy Fund at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She moved to Antigonish with her family in 1980 where she worked as the secretary to the Crown Attorney of Antigonish until her retirement in May of 2004.
She is survived by her three daughters, Christine MacDonald-Farber (Ron) Brockton, Massachusetts; Denise MacDonald, Canton, Ma.; Nicole MacDonald (Scott), South Boston, Ma. Her three grandaughters, Taylor (16), Ashley (11), and Mandy (7), all of Brockton, Ma. Her brothers, Patrick Bates, Sydney, James Bates, Sydney and sisters, Mary (Bates) Locke of Bateston, Cape Breton and Margaret (Bates) Bennett of Whitman, Ma.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Monday, Aug. 16 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish. Funeral service Tuesday, Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. in St. Ninian's Cathedral, Antigonish with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
Family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the ALS Society of Canada.
