It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Lionel Petrie of Gardiner Mines on Wed., May 27, 2009 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Lingan, he was a son of the late Walter and Annie (O’Riley) Petrie.
Lionel was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church, New Waterford.
He worked in the machine shop for Devco for several years and later owned and operated Lionel’s Golf Course in Gardiner Mines for over 20 years. Lionel was an avid sportsman who enjoyed horse racing, hockey, baseball, and golf. He also loved wood working and hunting with his dogs.
Surviving are brothers Joe (Agnes), Walter, Daniel (Monnie); sister Mary MacKenzie, all of New Waterford.
Besides his parents, Lionel was predeceased by a brother, Douglas.
Visitation will be held today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Saturday, May 30 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. Cremation will follow.
A luncheon will be held at St. Agnes Centre, Convent Street, New Waterford, immediately after the funeral mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Chapter.
