On Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather Leith MacLean passed away at his home in Port Alberni after a struggle with an untreatable cancer. He will be desperately missed and forever loved by his wife Edith of 61 years; his children Sharon (Bert) Simpson, Lawrence (Cheryl) MacLean, son-in-law Ken Service, Carman (Lavina) MacLean, Robert (Gayle) MacLean; his grandchildren: Andrew, Ryan, Lance, Geoff, Lauren, Matthew, Laura, Chase, Myles, Spencer and Devon, and his great-grandchildren: Kyla, Ava and Ethan. Leith was predeceased by his parents Havelock and Wanda MacLean, his daughter Esther Service, his sister Ruth and brother Byron. Leith was born on July 8, 1926, in Bayside, Prince Edward Island. His father was taken in a sudden car accident when Leith was only 16 years old. He then took over the farm and the responsibility of his family. In 1963 Leith moved with his family from Bayside to Port Alberni, B.C., to work at the MacMillan Bloedel Pulp Mill. Leith worked at the mill from 1963 and eventually retired in 1991 and moved to Parksville. In between travelling and up to his illness, Leith volunteered with the Benevolent Society, he enjoyed lawn bowling in the summer, and carpet bowling through the winter months. Leith being a people person loved sharing memories with his friends, neighbours, and his family close and far away. Leith was well respected and much loved by all who knew him and he will certainly be missed. His largely attended funeral was held at 2 p.m. on Aug. 23, 2010, at the Knox United Church in Parksville, B.C., with Rev. Foster Freed and Rev. Hilde J. Seal officiating. Cremation and reception followed.

The family of the late Leith MacLean wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Rev. Foster Freed and Rev. Hilde Seal, director of music Alan Whitmore, organist David Young, soloist Carol Boyd and church choir, UCW ladies in the kitchen who prepared food, Yates Funeral Service and Home Support Services for their caring professionalism. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses for their kindness and words of comfort at our home. We wish to express our appreciation to relatives, friends and neighbours for their support and to those who travelled so far to attend Leith's memorial.
