(age 94) of Halifax, formerly of St. John's, Newfoundland passed away peacefully at home on May 29th, 2009. Born in St. John’s, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Ada Cornick (nee Taylor). Educated at Bishop Spencer College, St. John’s, Jean was employed in various capacities and during World War II ventured to take positions at the U.S. Naval Base at Argentia, NFLD and at the US Army Base, Fort Pepperell in St. John’s. After the family relocated to Halifax in 1960, she was employed first with Eastern Trust, then with the Advertising Department of the Chronicle Herald for a number of years. She was a member of St. James Church since 1960 and of the A.C.W. where she held office as Treasurer, Social Action Secretary and with the Sanctuary Guild. Jean was a long time sponsor with Foster Parents Plan. She was an award winning knitter and used those considerable skills for the benefit of those served by the Unitarian Service Committee. She was also an avid bridge player. Jean was a gentle person with a loving and generous spirit who always demonstrated her commitment to the welfare of her family, friends and those in need. She will be ever missed and always in our hearts. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Serge) Cournoyer, grandson Shawn and great-granddaughter Courtney, as well as six nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty-five years, Harvey C. Dawe and by her sister Florence Chard and brother Norman Cornick.
