ARTHUR CARNEY

ARTHUR CARNEY

Date de décès : 25 septembre 2010

Arthur Reginald Carney died peacefully on Saturday, September 25th, 2010. He was 80 years old. Art was the first child born to Arthur and Miriam Carney. He was born on December 6th, 1929 in Regina and the family soon moved to Moose Jaw to reside on South Hill. Life was good and full living in this small prairie city and Dad took full advantage of it. His education was completed at Empire School and the Technical Collegiate. He was involved in many sports in his younger years including hockey, basketball, swimming, cricket and baseball. Art was a friendly young fellow and made friends easily. While spending many hours on the baseball diamonds, one special gal caught his eye: he and Beverley Montgomery were married on September 8th, 1951 and they had a love affair that did not end. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary just over two weeks ago in the company of family. At the time of their marriage, Dad was enrolled in an apprentice course with the CPR and following a brief time in Calgary they returned to Moose Jaw to live until 1956 when they moved to Saskatoon. Susan was born in Moose Jaw and Patricia, Laura Jean, Jim and Glen were born after their move to Saskatoon. They made many life-long friends from their early days of living in Greystone Heights and Sutherland. Community involvement was very important to Dad and he served on the Board of St. Paul's United Church and as the first president of the Sutherland Curling Club. Dad curled in both the Saturday morning CPR and the men's weekly leagues at the Sutherland Rink and in the summer months he golfed at the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club. In his recent and retiring years, he thoroughly enjoyed a good coffee and chat with the Robin's Donut crowd. He was hard-working and very industrious. He certainly believed in an honest day's work and this began when he was a young boy. He worked for the CPR for 28 years, beginning as a call boy and ending as a foreman. In the early 1970s Art and Bev began ARCO Equipment Sales and while this was a successful business venture, it was highly suspect that what Art truly treasured was the travel through our province meeting folks from all walks of life. There is likely not a highway he has not travelled. In 1972 they purchased property at McPhee Lake and soon a family cabin was built. This was Art's "heaven on earth" and he enjoyed life to its fullest there. For many years he hosted the McPhee Lake Invitational which was a gathering of his friends for several rounds of golf and a great BBQ on the back deck. Over the years, he could often be found on that same deck, surveying his next project and taking in his and God's handiwork. Dad also had a creative side in his woodworking which he took up in his 60s. He spent many hours in his workshop and his family and friends are the recipients of his loving hands. Art was a kind, fair and compassionate man. He was a good father and enjoyed his role as grandfather. We will treasure his good deeds and respect and remember his life, so well-lived! Art is survived by his loving wife, Bev, children Susan, Patty (Jack), Laura Jean (Marie), Jim (Grace) and Glen (Carol), grandchildren Melissa, Crystal, Vanessa, Tianna, Bobbie-Lee, Jerrilyn, Mitchel and Emily and nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Bob, a sister-in-law, Jeannette, sister-in-law, Yvonne, cousin, Jim and six nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Art and Miriam Carney, a sister, Iris and brother, Wayne, his brother-in-law Barry, in-laws Frederick and Isabella Montgomery and his special aunt and uncle, Frank and Kay Carney. Art's family is most grateful for the compassion and exemplary care that the staff of St. Ann's provided. We always knew that he was in the hands of angels during his time with you. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul's United Church on Thursday, 30 September, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
