Raymond Philip Belland, 75, Antigonish, passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
He was the son of the late David and Marjorie (MacDonald) Belland.
Born in St. Paul, Alta., moved to Fraser's Mills, Antigonish County, in 1939 and then into the town of Antigonish in 1940. In his early years, Raymond was educated at Morrison School, Antigonish, and later on in life completed his BA and BED at St. FX graduating in 1996. He worked at the Nova Scotia Pulp Mill in Port Hawkesbury. He was a bricklayer by trade and taught brick and tile at the Canso Regional Vocational school from 1969-90.
In 1995, Raymond and his wife, Eleanor returned back to the old family home on College Street, Antigonish, where they spent their retirement years. Throughout the years Raymond was active within his community volunteering for such things as minor hockey, community organizations, politics and cheering on his Montreal Canadiens. He was a huge supporter of furthering ones education and encouraged both family and friends to seek out such opportunities.
Raymond also loved to spend his spare time at Bayfield, a special place cherished by all family members.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Eleanor (DiVito) Belland, Antigonish; his son, Donald (Rena Oliver), Beaumont, Alta.; his daughters, Rosalind, Bible Hill, N.S., Darlene, Antigonish, Trish, Kentville, N.S., and Karen (Mark Gabrieau), Antigonish, N.S.; one brother, Maurice (Marie MacKenzie), Bathurst, N.B.; and his four grandchildren who held a special place in his heart, Katie, Spencer, Matthew and Amelia; along with several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his brothers, Father Donald, Gregory and Artie.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Ninian's Cathedral. Burial in the parish cemetery.
