DEVINE, Brendan John- Passed quietly away on Oct. 20, 2010, surrounded by his devoted family. Lovingly remembered by his wife, Marie (Kemp); daughters: Anne and Kathy and son-in-law Hugh Scott; loving sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and special family friend Sheilagh Guy Murphy. Also remembered by his dear nephews John and Paul Devine and their families in New Jersey. He was predeceased by his daughters Carol (2004) and Brenda (2009).
In 1921, at the age of 5, he moved, with his family, to New Jersey when his father, J. M. Devine, was appointed Newfoundland's Trade Commissioner to New York. In 1941, Brendan joined the U.S. Armed Forces where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant in the 94th Infantry Division of General George Patton's 3rd Army. He served in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia, where he was in charge of the Adjutant General's Dept. and was awarded a Bronze Star for his service.
After his discharge in 1946 he returned to Newfoundland to join his father, where, for the next 28 years he owned and operated the business known as The Big Six. After retirement in 1974 he became a counselor with the Federal Business Development Bank and later joined the teaching staff of the College of Trades and Technology.
Brendan's family wishes to express thanks and appreciation to the Nurses of 4NA and the Doctors of the Neurology Dept., Health Sciences Centre and a very special thank you to the kind and caring staff at Elizabeth Towers.
Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation on Sunday evening, October 24th from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. and Monday afternoon, October 25th from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Cremation to follow. Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, October 26th from St. Pius X Church at 9:30 a.m. Reception to follow at Princess Café, Elizabeth Towers.
