EDWARDS, Jane Emma (“Pru”)

née Prudence Hembrow at Romsey, Hampshire, England, 1932, daughter of Philip Beaumont Hembrow and Joan Hembrow. Educated in England and Malta. Survived by former husband, Stirling Edwards, sons, Nicholas and Christopher, and granddaughters, Mickie and Maggie. Her remarkable path took her from London to Fredericton, where she raised her family, to New York and San Francisco and, finally, to the mystically beautiful Galiano Island on British Columbia’s Gulf Coast, her true home and resting place.

A woman of deep and keen intellect, Jane was insatiably curious and tremendously well-read. She possessed, as well, a lively, constant and irreverent sense of humour and a depthless store of warmth and empathy for those around her. Greater yet was her English gentlewoman’s love for all of the animals, especially horses, with whom she surrounded herself throughout her life.

Jane passed from this life in the company of both her best friend and one of her great loves, the masterful song of Maria Callas, in a peaceful and dignified manner on the afternoon of November 18, 2010. Sorely missed by son Christopher, who sang her over the rainbow at her request, and by her many friends on Galiano.

Thanks to the Galiano Island community for her long decades of great happiness in its midst. Entrusted to the care of her beloved patron, Epona, for a safe ride to the otherworld, no doubt involving a graceful, dignified and thoroughly lady-like side-saddle posture.
