SMITH, Mary A. - It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our mother, Mary A. Smith at Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro, on Monday, November 22, 2010, age 74. Born in Lr. Economy, she was the daughter of the late Lyman & Mildred (McLaughlin) Berry. She lived the majority of her life in the community she supported and loved. She served as Post Mistress for several years, and later generously volunteered her time and enthusiasm to local organizations such as the “Get Together Club”, and the Economy Historical Committee. Mary loved being surrounded by young people and made her house a favorite gathering spot for her daughters’ and their friends for more than 20 years. Fun loving and social, she spent many happy hours quilting with her friends. She was well known for her tea leaf readings, and had visitors from far and wide who delighted in her insight and observations. She will be remembered by her family for her independence and quiet determination. One of her favorite things to do was laugh, and her quirky sense of humor never faltered. She is survived by her four daughters, [“her girls” whom she considered her “greatest gifts”], Heather (Keith) Robinson, Nathalie (Ken) Jamieson, all of Economy; Lynda (David) Yorke, Five Islands; Kathryn (Steve) Smith-Dunlop, Waterbury, CT.; three grandchildren, Kara (Jay) Henman, Dave (Sarah) Yorke and Elsa Yorke; one great granddaughter, Kenzie Mae Yorke; a brother Ralph Berry in California; sister-in-law, Margaret Berry, Waverley; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Ruth (McLaughlin) DeBaie; brother, Harland Berry; two children in infancy. The family would like to thank her caregivers at Cedarstone, Dr. Don Rowe for his compassion and care and a special thank you to Dr. Karen Ewing. Visitation 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, November 25 at Peniel United Church, Five Islands, where funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Rev. Florence Antle-Brison officiating. Interment to follow at the church cemetery. Donations may be made in Mary’s memory to Peniel United Church, the Arthritis Society or to a charity of choice.
