Willina Bird
Willina "Willna" Bird, age 82, of Amherst, passed away peacefully in the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Thursday, January 20, 2011.
Born in Milford, Mass, she was a daughter of the late Homer and Ruby (Allen) Wood.
She was assistant Post Mistress of the Nappan Post Office for over 30 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Nappan United Church, a former member of the church choir and for a number of years taught Sunday School. She was active in the community and was the local correspondent for the Citizen. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, Elizabeth Temple #6 and the Nomads. She was also a member of the True Blue Lodge #26.
She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Reta Hawkes, Amherst, NS, Betty Murray, Truro, NS, Kora Pfinder (Chuck), Orleans, ON, Monica Mitton (Danny), Point de Bute, NB; sons, Allan (Karen), New Glasgow, NS, Robert (Raelene), Amherst; 17 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by a daughter, Verna Haynes, grandson, David Haynes, son in law, Daniel Degrange; the last surviving member of her immediate family, she was also predeceased by sister Cora Brackley and brothers William and Robert.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) where visiting hours will take place on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held from the funeral home on Monday, January 24, 2011 at 2 pm, Rev. Wayne McCarther officiating. Burial will take place in the Renwick United Church Cemetery in the spring.
