It is with great sadness that the family of Edgar Sproule Garland of Swift Current, formerly of Success, announce that he went to the Lord on January 26th, 2011, after complications from surgery in Regina General Hospital, Regina, SK with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Elsie (nee Bowditch), his daughters Linda (Glenn) Stewart of Swift Current and Peggy (Bill) Stirton of Clavet, SK grandchildren Shayne (Kristie) Stewart of Stewart Valley, Kristi (Marc Schwartz) Stewart of Swift Current, Brianna Stirton of Clavet, Sean Stirton of Saskatoon, great-grandchildren Logan and Lauren Stewart, Stewart Valley, brother Donald (Shirley) Garland of Hanover, ON, sister-in-law Christine Garland of Pinkerton, ON, cousin Bruce (Irene) Garland and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents William and Mary, brother Arthur, and uncles and aunts, including his uncle, Edgar, who was killed in WW1 and for whom he was named. Edgar was born on July 15, 1919 in Pinkerton Ontario. He and Elsie were married June 1, 1948 and farmed in the Success area until 1989. After 49 years of living on the farm, they moved into Swift Current - first to a condo and in 2009 to The Bentley. They had a rich life together for over 62 years. Edgar first came West on a government sponsored farm labor program and soon the Prairies had his heart. He loved the open spaces, the blue skies and the farm life. Edgar always pursued excellence in everything he put his hand to, particularly his farming. He had a great respect for education, loved learning about people and the world, faithfully attended and supported his church and was a quiet, loving inspiration to his family. Travel was a particular joy to him and included many return trips to family in Ontario: he also took great pleasure in his many winters in Arizona. He was an avid reader and loved to watch hockey - in person or NHL. Edgar was a man of dry wit and loved to be humoured. Edgar was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge. As well, he spent endless hours helping his daughters with 4H activities, was in Eastern Star and a leader in Job's Daughters, locally and provincially. On occasion to supplement their income he worked in the oilfields and for Stats Canada. He served many years on the Unit School Board and was particularly proud of his role in the building of the Swift Current Comprehensive High School. Although it was a controversial situation involving high schools leaving small towns, Edgar was committed to supporting the broader educational opportunities the new school would bring to this area. Because of his love for education, Edgar strongly advocated advanced education for his girls and his grandchildren. He was always willing to give tangible support to family and friends who endeavoured to better themselves. Edgar was a loving, gentle, caring, thoughtful, and trustworthy man, a good provider and a wonderful example to those who knew him. Funeral services were held on January 29, 2011 at St Stephen's Anglican Church with Rev Jonathan Hoskin officiating. Organist was Janet Neubauer. Scripture was read by Brianna Stirton. The eulogy/tribute was given by Shayne and Kristi Stewart. Pallbearers were Tom Garland, Richard Garland, Ron Garland, Bill Garland, Alan Colpitts and Don Kerslake. Honorary Pallbearers were nieces Marlene Garland-Kreem, Donna Reed and Louise Guay, whom attended from Ontario. Ushers were Mervin Watson and Pete Froese. Masonic Lodge members formed a honor guard upon leaving the church. Donations made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Success Community Hall or to the charity of the donor's choice and would be appreciated by the family. The Internment Service will take place at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Swift Current. Funeral Arrangements were in the care of Swift Current Funeral Home.
