Opal Audrey (McNulty) Black, age 84, of Oxford, passed away peacefully at the Moncton City Hospital on Sunday, February 13, 2011.
The youngest of three girls, she was born at home in Williamsdale, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia in 1927, daughter of the late Roland and Clara (Nix) McNulty.
Opal grew up and attended school in Williamsdale. Following graduation she trained to be a teacher, and spent a year teaching at Fort Lawrence, NS. After which she trained at the Highland View Hospital, Amherst where she became a Registered Nurse in 1949. She began work at Pier 21, then operated "Black's Maternity Home" in Oxford for 7 years. In 1958 she began a 30 year career at All Saints Hospital, Springhill.
Opal has generously contributed her time and efforts to community organizations such as the Emergency Measures Organization, Oxford, Oxford Town Councilor for 13 years, 8 of which she was deputy mayor, the Oxford Pioneer Heritage Club, Northern Regional Health Board, All Saints Community Health Care Foundation, Springhill, Primary Care Project, Springhill, Cumberland Regional Economic Development Association (CREDA).
She was a devout member of the Cedar Temple #21, Pythian Sisters, Oxford , acting for many years as the Secretary, working her way up to Grand Chief, Past Grand Chief. Her proudest achievement within the lodge was 2 years holding the highest office of Past Supreme Representative of the Pythian Sisters of the Maritime Provinces.
She was an adherent to the Oxford Church of the Nazarene and an active member of the Sunrise Campers, local snowmobile clubs, Friday Coffee Club and the Red Hatters. In addition to her many activities, she most enjoyed spending time at the beach with her family and friends.
She will be sadly missed by her daughters Heather (Jerry) MacLellan, Masstown, Bonnie (Bob) Doncaster, Oxford, Cindy (Alan) Berry, Regina SK; 7 grandchildren, Kevin, Kim, Korinne, Shelley, Susan, Heidi and Laura; 7 great-grandchildren, Kyle, Emily, Morgan, Hunter, Ethan, Tyler and Brady; sister Phyllis Embree, Truro,
She was predeceased by her husband Shirley Ira; sister Doris Treen.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the W Allen Funeral Home, 60 Water St., Oxford, NS, 902-447-2167 (www.allenfuneralhome.ca) where visiting hours will take place on Tuesday from 7 to 9 pm and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, February 17 at 2 pm from the Oxford Church of the Nazarene, Lower Main St. Oxford. Burial will take place at the Birchgrove Cemetery in the spring.
