It is with profound sadness that we, the family, announce the death of our dear mother, Martena, 94, at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, on July 13, 2009.
Born Nov. 12, 1914, in Sampsonville to Peter and Mary (Sampson) Burke, Martena spent her entire life here.
Through the years, Martena was a well-loved nanny/housekeeper to many families in her own area but also in Antigonish. She had fond memories of all the children in her care. Martena enjoyed bingo, playing cards and visits from family and friends.
A devout Catholic, Martena was a parishioner of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, a member of St. Peter’s Altar Society and as a young woman, the Children of Mary. She also was involved with 4-H, Home and School Association and Bonnie Brae and Lakeside seniors clubs. She was very proud of the hundreds of knitted bonnets for preemie babies that she sent to the IWK.
A proud mother and grandmother, Martena was overjoyed with the addition of four great-great-grandchildren to her family.
Surviving are sons, Cletus (Peggy), St. Peter’s and their children, Anna (Ross) Ferguson, David (Shirley), Maxine (Wade) Mombourquette, Aubrey (Wendy), Bonnie (Harold) Davidson and Colette (Bradly) Boucher; Conrad (Dianne), Sampsonville and their children, Martha (Troy) Allen and MacKenzie (Leigh); Wallace (Bernadette), Timberlea and their children, Susan (Kevin) Hawes and Michael (Takumi); Bernard V., Richibucto, N.S.; daughters, Doris (late Ray) Landry, Sampsonville and their children, Andrew (Patsy), Glenora (John Stark), June (Leonard) Carvery and Shaun (Laurie); Lola (late Cornelius), Richmond Villa and their children, Christopher (Julie) and Raylene (Art) MacCready; and Marilyn (Al) Proctor and their children, Rémi Savard and Renée (Steph Trempe). Also surviving are 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Martena is also survived by her brother, Adrian (Theresa) Burke, Sampsonville; and a special niece, Ora (late Sam) Burke, French Cove; as well as many other nephews, nieces and cousins.
Martena was predeceased by her husband, Henry (Harry) Landry, a daughter, Elizabeth, grandchildren, Vickie Lynn Burke and Erwin Landry, brothers, Peter, Amos, Walter, Elias, Dan, Thomas, Francis and Peter, sisters, Annie Fraser, Dorothy ‘Dot’ Landry and Mary Margaret Burke.
Visitation will be held in Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s, Thursday, July 16 from 2-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Friday, July 17 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Everett MacDow, P.P. officiating. Burial to follow in St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Richmond Villa Activity Department or a charity of one’s choice.
Thank you to Richmond County Home Support Services for their care of mom in the past few years and to the EMT and St. Peter’s Volunteer Fire Department.
