It is with profound sadness that we, the family of Neila Simmons, announce her peaceful passing on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at the Hinton General Hospital in Alberta, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, Sept. 10, 1920, Neila was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah (nee Campbell) Fowler.
Neila graced this world with 90 tremendous years of triumph over tragedy. She faced every obstacle put before her with tenacity and abandon, always and without hesitation, putting the needs of her family first. No matter who you were, where you came from or why you were at her door, Neila never hesitated to open her home and offer whatever she had. (You better have left your shoes at the end of the street!).
She was the backbone of our family and will be forever held in the highest regard by her children as “Ma,” her grandchildren, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren as “Nana.”
Neila is survived by her two daughters, Denise (Bob) Shepherd, Ontario, Patricia Olafson, Edmonton; and son, David Stratton, Ontario; grandchildren, Bob (Michelle) Simmons, Beaumont, Alta., and their children, Cole and Mackenzie; Kelly Smith (Madonna Popwell), Hinton, Alta., and their children, Corey, Courtney and Adam; Kimberly Borden (Shaun), Lake Echo, N.S.; and Steven Borden, Ontario, and his children, Rebecca, Paul and Emily; one great-great-granddaughter, Brooklynn Shaw; brother, Ade (Alma); sisters, Kitty (Robby) Robinson, Chrissie (Winston) Smith, Dolly (Tony) Sollazzo.
Neila was predeceased by her loving husband, Harvey Elmer Simmons, brothers, Cecil, Fabian (Anita), Freddy (Eva), George (Barbara) and sister, Christina (Will).
In honouring Nan’s wishes, cremation has taken place, with her remains to be placed with Harvey at Greenwood Cemetery.
A service will be announced at a later date.
