They relocated to St. John’s in 1967 where Esther began working at the Mun Bookstore. After her retirement, never one to be idle, she gave freely of her time to a multitude of volunteer organizations including the Basilica Catholic Women’s League, the St. John’s Seniors Resource Centre, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Women’s Institute and has been a World Vision sponsor for over 23 years. Esther also worked tirelessly to have the Newfoundland Forestry Unit recognized for its wartime contributions. In 2001, she was successful in having a wreath laid in honour of the Foresters for the first time at the St. John’s Remembrance Day Ceremony. In addition to her volunteer activities, Esther was the devoted matriarch of her family. She was very much a part of their daily lives and instilled in them a love of life and a strong sense of service to others and the importance of family. In essence, Esther was a remarkable woman.
