HEADLINE: Douglas Grant Lochhead
Douglas Grant Lochhead, age 88, of Sackville, passed away peacefully at the Drew Nursing Home on Tuesday, March 15, 2011.
Born in Guelph, Ont., he was a son of the late Allan and Helen (VanWart) Lochhead.
A veteran of World War II, he was a member of a special unit trained to prepare for invasion along the coast of England. He met his wife, a librarian at the Toronto Public Library in 1948. From 1951 to 1952 he was a Librarian at Victoria College, B.C., then at Cornell University in 1952. From 1953 to 1960 he was the University Librarian at Dalhousie University, then Director of Libraries at York University and associate professor from 1960-1963. From 1963-1975 he was the Librarian of Massey College at the University of Toronto and a full professor of English. In 1975, he moved to Sackville, N.B., to become the Director of Canadian Studies at Mount Allison University until 1987. He was appointed Writer in Residence at Mount Allison University in 1987 until his retirement in 1990. In 2002, he was inducted as the first Poet Laureate for Sackville, N.B.
He will be sadly missed by his two daughters; Sara Louise Lochhead (Jan Johnsson), Hantsport, N.S., Mary Elizabeth Lochhead, Winnipeg, Man., and Janet Fotheringham, his companion of 10 years, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Jean St. Clair Beckwith in 1991 and by his brother Kenneth in 2006.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville, N.B., 506-364-1300, where visiting hours were held on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service was held from the Mount Allison University Chapel on Saturday March 19, 2011, at 2 p.m., Rev. Jeff Murray and Rev. John Perkin officiating.
Burial will take place in the Sackville Cemetery in the spring.
