Violet Mae Hunter
Violet Mae (Churchill) Hunter passed away peacefully on Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst, at the wonderful age of 102. Born in Leamington, NS, on May 11, 1908, she was the daughter of the Late Jordan and Ella Mae (Simmonds) Churchill.
She lived for over 90 years in Springhill where she was a member of the Springhill Baptist Church, the Pythian Sisters and, although not an actual member, was a generous supporter of the IODE. Her husband Wylie Hunter was a victim of the 1958 Springhill Mine Disaster. She is survived by her son Ralph (Audrey) of Springhill, her daughter-in-law, Helen Hunter of North Bay, Ontario; four grandsons, Clyde (Sherry), Reno, Nevada, Gill (Karin) Ottawa, Keith (Wendy), Oxford, NS and David (Ann) Middleton, NS; four great-grandchildren, Greg (Anthea) Hunter, St. Catherine's, ON, Kristina (Derrick) Blair, North Bay, On, Emily (Rev. Jonathan) Rowe, St. John's, NL and Maggie Hunter, Middleton, NS as well as two great-great-grandchildren, Owen Hunter and Frances Rowe.
She was also predeceased by her son, Gerald; daughter-in-law, Elspa, and grandson, Kenneth. She was the last surviving member of her family, being predeceased by her siblings, Laura, Elizabeth, Robert, Isabel, Clara, Beatrice, Myles, Roxanna, Frank, Alexander, Walter and David.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of A. H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill. Memorial Service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday April 6, 2010 from the Funeral Home with The Reverend Jonathon Rowe officiating. Burial in Leamington Cemetery.
