Charles Solomon

It is with saddened hearts that the family of Charles W. Solomon of Kingsclear First Nation announce his passing on March 25, 2011 at his residence. He was 91. Born in Fredericton, he was a son of the late Abel Gabriel and Sarah (Polchies) Solomon and husband of the late Geraldine (Tomer) Solomon. Charles was a carpenter by trade, a respected elder, medicine man, teacher who played a very vital role in carrying and passing on traditional teachings that will be upheld forever. He was extremely proud of being a Veteran of WWII and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #4. He attended mass faithfully, and made yearly pilgrimages to Sainte Anne de Beaupre, and to Skiff Lake. Throughout the years he spent a great deal of time visiting various youth groups to tell his stories and to teach about his people’s heritage, history and culture. He was very well known for his singing, chanting and story telling in Canada and the USA. It was recently announced that he was to receive his Honorary Doctorate from UNB. He was also an avid bingo and card player. Survived by his children Natalie Solomon-Grey (Bob), Francis “Butch” (Karen), Charles Jr. (Lucy), Sarah Sacobie (Gary), Cathy Wilson (Dennis), Becky Sirois (Marc), Tony (Uncle Barb), Peter (Sarah), Louise Solomon (Valerie Polchies), Theresa Polchies (David), Anthony Joseph (Jessica Paul); 23 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, chosen children, nieces and nephews; best friend Raymond Nicholas. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by a great grandson Lawrence.
Resting at his home 80 French Village Rd., Kingsclear First Nation beginning Sunday at 7PM as well as all day and evening on Monday. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday March 29, 2011 from St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 11:00 AM, with Bishop Robert Harris, Rev. Monte Peters and Father Curtis Sappier. Cremation to follow, with Interment at 7 AM on Thursday March 31, 2011 at Saint Anne’s Parish, Kingsclear. Memorials to the Canadian Cancer Society, Parkinson Foundation, NB Heart and Stroke or Diabetes Association would be appreciated.
