COOKE, Ernest Andrew, “Narn”, 96, Lockeport, passed away peacefully in Surf Lodge Nursing Home on Wednesday, March 23, 2011. Born in Lockeport he was a son of the late Nelson and Jennie (Broughm) Cooke. Ernest was a devoted husband, father and grandfather with unconditional love for his wife, children and grandchildren, with whom he loved to hunt and fish. He worked at National Sea Products for 40 years as a stationary engineer. He was an avid baseball player and played with the Lockeport Seacaps for many years, earning the name of “Fireball Cooke”. The highlight of his ball career was “beating those Colored Giants in 1935, sometimes known as the “game of the decade”, if not, the century. He enjoyed gardening. He is survived by daughters, Lorna (Bernard) Townsend, West Head; Irene (Wallace) Hallett, Lockeport; 10 grand-children; 17 great-grandchildren; nine great great-grandchildren; one nephew. He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel (MacKenzie) Cooke; brothers, Earl and Upton; sister, Violet Williams; daughter, Charlotte Savoury, granddaughter Donna in infancy, and niece, Dorothy. Funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 29 in the Lockeport Pentecostal Church with Pastor Peter Snow officiating. Interment was in Lockeport Cemetery.
