“Unable are the loved to die. For love is immortality.” Emily Dickinson
Born January 27, 1927 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Died following a brief illness at 90 years of age, on May 27, 2017, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Deeply loved and fondly known as Jo, Joie and Josie by her family and friends, Jo enjoyed life to the fullest and above all had a deep faith. She will be sadly missed, but she would encourage us, her family and friends to honour her memory with acts of kindness to those in need and to each other.
Survived by family who miss and love her dearly, her brother, John Strickey; daughter, Marianne (Dariusz); granddaughter, Ania; sisters-in-law, Helen Heakes and Mary Brooks, and many wonderful cousins, godchildren, nieces and nephews. Jo also leaves behind steadfast friends and neighbours, who generously supported her in many ways, helping her to maintain the life she loved in her home.
Predeceased by husband, Gerard Joseph O’Sullivan; her parents, Wanda Ann Pitchuk and Edmund (Alek) Strickey, and infant brother, Michael. Also by sisters-in-law, Marg O’Sullivan, Agnes Nevins, Maureen Smith, Bernadette Swift and Nellie Strickey, and brothers-in-law, Alfred Heakes, David Brooks, John O’Sullivan, James Smith, James Swift and Wilfred Nevins.
Jo studied nursing at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish and St. Mary’s School of Nursing, Montreal. After marrying her beloved Gerry, they moved to Toronto, where she practiced Public Health Nursing and then made time to volunteer in the community. Among those activities, she was a founding member of the Senior’s Club of St. Bernard’s Parish and a member of the Parkdale Golden Age Club. For many years Jo enthusiastically attended Toronto Symphony Orchestra concerts and the Toronto Opera. Jo loved to meet new people and travelled across Canada, through Europe and in the U.S., gaining friends along the way who she would stay in touch with the rest of her life.
After enjoying over 40 years with family and life-long friends in Toronto, Jo and Gerry moved to Dartmouth, NS. There, they began a new chapter in their lives, making wonderful friends in a welcoming community. Jo loved volunteering at St. James’ Food Bank with friends who were happy to let her make the tea and join in greeting the clients. She also took part in lawn bowling, boating (including riding the Tidal Bore at age 75!) and, after taking up bridge in later years, enjoyed the camaraderie of members in several bridge clubs, including Brightwood. Jo was an active member of St. Peter’s Church, organizing Senior’s events, participating in the Catholic Women’s League and proudly taking part in St. Peter’s acclaimed production of The Sound of Music. She was a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women and St. F.X. President’s Club. Jo was also a fan and supporter of the Nova Scotia Symphony and Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra.
Jo enjoyed celebrating holidays with family and friends and never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She was especially thrilled to have so many friends and family join us to celebrate her 90th birthday in January. Jo was very proud of her Polish heritage, travelling to Poland and maintaining her connection to the Nova Scotia Polish community, in particular by supporting St. Mary’s Polish Church in Sydney, NS. She always took part in the Polish festivals at St. Anthony’s, Dartmouth, enjoying all the wonderful food, dancing and music.
Thank you to employees of the Dartmouth General Hospital for the excellent care given to Jo by wonderful nursing staff; especially Daniella, Lynda, Ardina, Nadine, Juanita, Julie, Mary Anne, Janice, Brenda, Marilyn and Kathie, caring palliative, home care and OT staff; Angela, Sarah and Crystal, and the kind doctors, especially Drs. Lawless and Cameron.
Visitation on Wednesday, May 31, 7-9 at Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St., Dartmouth.
Funeral Mass Thursday June 1, at 10 a.m., St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Dartmouth, Father James Richards officiating. Reception to follow in the Parish Centre.
Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, NS.
For those who wish to remember Jo with a donation, please consider St. Peter’s Church or Food Bank, Dartmouth, St. James Food Bank Dartmouth, St. Mary’s Polish Church, Sydney, NS or a charity of your choice.
