Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John's, on Thursday, June 1, 2017, Nicky Obed aged 60 years. Predeceased by his parents: Adolfa Obed (father) and Emily Obed (mother); and brother, Enoch Obed. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of almost 27 years, Renee; parents-in-law: Verna and Hubert Ivany (St. John's); brother-in-law, Herman Ivany (St. John's); sister, Sarah Ponniuk (Goose Bay, NL); sister-in-law, Ellen Obed (Maine, US); a large number of nieces, nephews and extended family; special friends: Gary Bloomfield (Goose Bay); Paula and Rob Knight (Pouch Cove); school mate and lifelong friend, Ern Budgell (Portugal Cove); all orphanage brothers and sisters who grew up with Nicky in St. Anthony and North West River; his many coffee buddies at Tim Hortons and McDonalds on Torbay Road; as well as a large circle of other special friends and acquaintances - too numerous to mention - particularly in Goose Bay, St. John's and many other parts of the Province. Nicky was a cook for many years at radar sites up North and for Voisey's Bay. He was known to many across the province through his involvement with community programs, volunteer time with Camp Day at Tim Hortons, as well as his role of "Santa Claus" for different organizations including McDonalds and The Friendship Centre, Goose Bay, as well as for other special events. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, on Friday, June 2, from 6-9pm. Funeral service to take place at Barrett's Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 12:00noon, with interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nicky's memory may be made to Thrive or Choices For Youth - Nicky wished to give back to the younger generation after growing up in the orphanage system.
