George McHenry

George McHenry Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Monday, June 12, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Dad was born on November 10, 1941 to Dorothy and George Sr. He spent his early years in Melfort, North Battleford and settled in Prince Albert until his passing. He married his high school sweetheart, Georgina Bassett and spent 50 memorable years together until mom’s passing. Dad’s life was dedicated to education, receiving his Bachelor of Education Degree at the University of Saskatchewan. He was honored to be the first principal at W. J. Berezowski and Vickers school. His commitment continued after his retirement as an elected member of the Saskatchewan Rivers School Board for over 25 years. Dad was an active man participating in various sporting activities such as skiing, snorkeling, swimming and hockey. As an accomplished handyman, he found it very rewarding to take on any project and persevered until it was done. Caulking and duct tape were his best friends. Summers were often spent at the lakes, beginning with a tent trailer, graduating to a camper trailer "the Scamper" and finally to the family cabin at Candle Lake. Most importantly, was his support and devotion to his four daughters which became stronger after mom’s passing. Dad valued his time spent with his son-in-laws debating, laughing and storytelling. A very caring and likeable man, Dad always had a bounce in his step and a twinkle in his eye with a gift for making you feel special. Dad was also the proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and wore many hats as a chauffeur, cheerleader and confidante. Dad is survived by his children and grandchildren, Cory (Jim) Chad and children Taylor, Courtney (Lyndan); Tammy (Bart) Vick and children Jenna (Bo) and Dustin; Melissa Bueckert and children Ryan (Melissa), Allie (Cody) and Sydney; Susan (Cory) Donaldson and children Kaitlyn (Ty) and Hannah; brother Tom (Bev) McHenry; sister Mona (Ted) Bassett; sister-in-law Arlene (Gerry) Huber; brother-in-law Don (Wendy) Bassett; sister-in-law, Terry Barber. He was predeceased by his loving wife Georgina; his parents George and Dorothy McHenry; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Margaret and Gordon Rutz and his niece, Anita Cochrane (Bassett). Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 16, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 260 – 25th Street. East, Prince Albert, SK with Pastor Dennis Serfas, Director Spiritual Care, Prince Albert Parkland Health Region officiating. In lieu of other tributes, those wishing to make a donation in memory of George McHenry may do so to the Canadian Cancer Society, 54 – 11th Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 0Z9.
