On June 18, 2017, Gladys Gjesdal, late of Birch Hills, SK, passed away at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert at the age of 97. She is survived by her children: Janet (Wayne) Peckett of Nanaimo, BC, Karen Jordan, Knute (Melodie) Gjesdal, and Steven (Joy) Gjesdal all of Birch Hills, SK; her grandchildren: Crystal (Brian) Morton of Victoria, BC, Chelsea Peckett of Nanaimo, BC, Amanda (Sipho) Moyo of Kwekwe, Zimbabwe, Loretta (Greg) Flath of Grandora, SK, Travis Jordan of Clearwater, BC, Colin (Bethany) Gjesdal of Halifax, NS, Scott (Karla) Gjesdal of Saskatoon, SK, Kristi (Ian) Stolee of Prince Albert, SK, Michelle (Stephen) Stoyko of Edmonton, AB, and Mark (Emma) Gjesdal of Camrose, AB; her great-grandchildren: Siyabonga Moyo, Jeremy, Jessica and Joelle Flath, Anja Gjesdal, Knute, Jakob and Kaja Gjesdal, Adalynn Stolee; step-great-grand daughter: Dylana Flath; her sibling: Stella Martin of California; and her in-laws: Clifford and Myrtle Swenson of Saskatoon, SK, Jennie Gjesdal, Verner Arnestad both of Birch Hills, SK, George and Alice Tastad, from Saskatoon, SK. She was predeceased by her husband: Selmer Gjesdal; her parents: Sven and Karen Helland; her siblings: Lillian (Knute) Evanger, Agnes (Erwin) Lorenz, Andreas (Dolly) Helland, Olger (Olga) Helland, Sverre (Lorrine) Helland, brother-in-law Finny Martin; her in-laws: Knute and Amanda Gjesdal, child Kerna Gjesdal, Trond and Margaret Tomtene, Hanley and Alfhild Mitchell, George and Kerna Haugen, Harvey Gjesdal, Norma Arnestad; and her son-in-law: Bill Jordan.
Gladys married Selmer Gjesdal on July 4th, 1945 and they farmed together in the Lake Park area. She participated in all the chores of a busy farm, grew and harvested a large garden, preserved food, sewed for the family, and enjoyed quilting for Lutheran World Relief. She was very active in women's church ministries and for many years wrote up local news for the newspaper. In their retirement years Selmer and Gladys moved to Birch Hills where they enjoyed carpet bowling as well as many social evenings playing SkipBo with friends. She loved to visit with neighbors and keep up with local happenings – especially over a cup of coffee and cookie!
